He was not only an outstanding novelist, but also one of the most successful dramatists and short-story writers. He was born in Paris in 1874. His father was an official at the British Embassy in France and William spent his childhood in that country. In his later life he also lived for long periods there. His parents died when he was very little, and the boy was brought up by his uncle, a clergyman. At the age often the boy was sent to England to attend school. In 1890 he went abroad and studied at the University of Heidelberg, from which he returned in 1892. As his parents had destined him for the medical profession, he became a medical student in London. After graduating from a medical college he worked at a hospital in Lambeth — one of the poorest districts of London. Although he had taken his degree in medicine and become a fully qualified doctor, he decided to devote his life to literature.
