The lion (Panthera leo) is a large wild cat native to Africa and Asia. Male lions are easily recognizable by their thick, dark mane of fur that encircles their head. Adult males can weigh between 330 and 550 pounds, while females are slightly smaller, weighing between 260 and 400 pounds.
