The Incas lived in the Andes, on the territory of modern Peru, Chile, Ecuador and Bolivia. They created the largest state of pre-Columbian America Tahuantinsuyu with the majestic cities of Cusco, Quito and Machu Picchu. Although it was beneficial for the Spaniards to present the Incas as illiterate tribes, studies have shown that the Incas had their own script and annals (see quipu). The number of the Incas and the peoples subject to them (Quechua, Aymara) reached 10 million, of which 200,000 served in the army.
