The earliest recorded Olympic Games 1) WERE HELD in Olympia, in ancient Greece, in 776 B. C. The modern Olympic Movement 2) WAS STARTED in 1894 when French educator, Pierre de Coubertin, brought together a group of sports and philosophy 3) LEADERS from around the world for the International Athletic Congress.

The first winter sport 4) WAS INCLUDED into the Olympics in 1908; it was figure skating. Later, Ice Hockey 5) WAS ADDED to the competition programme in 1920.  The First Olympic Winter Games 6) TOOK place in Chamonix, France, in 1924.

Nowadays the Winter Olympics 7) ARE HELD every four years but in a different year from the Summer Games. In Salt Lake City more than 2,000 athletes 8) COMPETED in 78 different events. Half of  these events 9) HAVE BEEN ADDED to the Olympic programme since 1984.
