Relax! You'll Be More Productive
by Tony Schwartz
We rely on time to help us get more done; when there's more to do, we invest more hours. But
the best way to get more done may be to spend more time doing less
We can increase our energy even though we can't increase the number of work hours in a
day New research shows that daytime workouts, short afternoon naps, longer sleep hours, and
longer and more frequent vacations improve job performance and health.
We know that spending more hours at work often leads to less time for sleep, and insufficient
sleep reduces our performance. In a recent study of nearly 400 employees, researchers found
that sleeping too little-- defined as less than six hours each night- was one of the best predictors
of poor job performance.
A researcher at Stamford University found that when male basketball players slept 10 hours a
night, their performance in practice improved by an average of 9%. Daytime naps have a similar
effect on performance, and longer naps have an even greater impact than shorter ones. A sleep
researcher at the University of California found that a 60-to 90-minute nap improved memory test
results as much as getting eight hours of sleep did
More vacations are also beneficial. Rest and relaxation are part of our physical needs. Human
beings aren't designed to use energy continuously. Rather, we are meant to alternate between
using and recovering our energy
The energy that employees bring to their jobs is far more important to the value of their work
than the number of hours they work. By managing energy more skillfully, it's possible to get more
done, in less time, over a longer period.

"Relax! You’ll Be More Productive" by Tony Schwartz

Summary Response Essay

In his article, “Relax! You’ll Be More Productive,” Tony Schwartz proves the importance of relaxing and argues that a good rest generally improves results much more significantly than just spending more hours on work tasks. The author points out that spending more time at work usually leads to sleeping less and eventually results in poor performance, as “human beings aren’t designed to use energy continuously.” He also says that we should consider our physical needs, and then we will be able to do more in less time.

Honestly, I could not agree more with Tony Schwartz. In today’s world, our pace of life is getting faster, and I cannot help but notice, that sometimes all we do is run. Every minute of our day must be spent wisely and effectively. For example, in 2007, a study found out that people are now walking 10% faster than just a few decades earlier. Also, people who walk fast generally tend to eat, drink, and speak quickly, and they hate wasting time in queues too. Such results can probably be explained by the fact that everyone wants to be productive, and our success in now measured by how much work we do and how useful we are. Computer technologies are also making it easier for us to do things quicker. However, once engaged in the race for success, people start to forget about their physical and mental needs. That leads to world-wide mental health problems, such as a 39% increase in mood disorders and 21% increase in anxiety disorders. At the same time, as Tony Schwartz clearly shows in his article, living a healthy lifestyle boosts energy that can be used while working. After all, a healthy and well-rested person makes a much better worker than an exhausted and burned-out one.

Looking back at my previous school years, I remember myself trying to do my homework even if I was extremely tired and could barely stay awake. It never ended well, and even though most of the time, I somehow managed to complete everything before morning and probably sleep for a few hours, I was always drowsy at school, could not think straight, and generally performed much worse than I could. It led to different mood problems, and finally, my body resources started to deplete. I realised that I was no longer able to stay awake if I was tired, and even if I somehow managed to do that, it was pointless anyway, because all I could do was stare at my book doing nothing. Finally, I started to realise that if I needed to get things done, I had to rest and give myself enough time to sleep and relax. I found out that it was better to sleep for a few hours when I wanted to and finish my work right after than trying to get things done while fighting off sleepiness. That way, I could sleep more but at the same time, complete my assignments much quicker and do well at school.

Reading Tony Schwartz’s article “Relax! You’ll Be More Productive” really made me think about the importance of considering my physical needs and mental well-being. I once again realised how easy it is to get carried away when doing your work, especially if that is something that interests you or if you want to achieve a good result. I think that today, living in a society of workaholics, we really need to remember that we cannot work with our energy drained, and that by managing energy wisely, it is indeed possible “to get more done, in less time, over a longer period.”

SUMMARY

Вступление

  • имя автора
  • название статьи
  • главная идея
  • пересказ текста с использованием reporting verbs
  • аргументы автора, подкрепляющие идею, но не примеры
  • ≈ 1/3 текста статьи

RESPONSE
