He wanted to know if we had been shopping for food.

2. "Where did they live before moving here?" he asked.

He wanted to know where they had lived before moving there.

3. He said, "I am writing an essay tomorrow."

He said that he was writing an essay the next day.

4. You said, "I will do this for you"

You said you would do that for me.

5. She said, "I am not tired now."

She said that she was not tired then.

6. They said, "We were in Paris last week."

They said that they had been to Paris the week before.

* если говорится о том, что люди побывали в городе и вернулись обратно, то после have been/had been нужен предлог to.

Объяснение:

При преобразовании прямой речи в косвенную нужно применять правило согласования времен. Времена Present в прямой речи надо заменять на времена Past в придаточной части/косвенной речи.

Past Simple в косвенной речи заменяется на Past Perfect.

Также необходимо заменять слова, такие как here - на there, now - then, today - that day, this - that, tomorrow - the next day и т.д.
